Common Swim Spa Heater Issues

So, what are the possible telltale signs that you may need to find some replacement items for the specific parts of your swim spa heater? Needless to say, topping the list would be the swim spa water temperature itself. It should be your first clue about this.

A swim spa heater is comprised of many different components. If there is a sudden change to your swim spa water temperature, and there seems to be no apparent reason or explanation behind it, you may need to look into those components to identify the real reason.

Flow Switches

Normally,  flow switches will indicate if there is an adequate amount of water flowing into the heating element of your swim spa. It is capable of sensing the amount of water flowing through it. Besides, they usually come with 2 wires that are linked to the swim spa’s dedicated control panel. You can tell when a flow switch gets stuck, that is when it remains open when it is supposed to do otherwise, or it is close when it should remain open.

The 2  of the most usual reasons behind many different spas and hot tub heater issues are loose connections and wire shorts.

Heater Elements

These are wire filaments, encased within an insulating powder which are usually protected by a  sheath. Normally, you will find them in the heating chamber in the form of a stainless steel cylinder. Provided that everything is properly connected and working okay, the power should be able to heat the element, eventually causing the spa water to warm up to desired temperatures.

The Contactor

If you want to know if there is a regular amount of voltage going to your swim spa, the contractor will be able to tell. It will close and will allow the energy to pass via the heater element.

There are instances where contactors are a bit louder than usual, which may cause alarm to owners the first time around. A clicking sound can be heard over the moment that the power passes through to the element.

The most common issue observed with the contactor includes bugs getting their way into the contactors or the occasional popping of springs.

In order for them to close, contactors need to have power to the coil. It can come via hi-limit,  the thermostat, or the pressure switch. If any of them failed on transmitting power, it would be unlikely for the contactor to close.

Knowing some of this basic information affords you an invaluable starting point in as far as troubleshooting a hot tub heater or an outdoor swim spa heater is concerned. Never try to perform major a swim spa heater repair measures on your own in the absence of proper electrical qualifications. Doing so will render you to put everything on the line.
