How Can an Adjustable Bed Help in Mitigating Sleep Apnea Symptoms?

It is estimated that around 22 million people in the country are currently suffering from sleep apnea. 80% of these cases, however, remained undiagnosed. Those who are afflicted with sleep apnea tend to suffer innumerable restless nights and medical professionals believe this might have something to do with a number of serious health problems.

In addition to traditional treatments such as surgery or the use of CPAP machines, we think that the use of adjustable beds would be of great help, too.

Raising The Head Helps to Prevent Throat Obstructions

While you are fast asleep and lying on a flat surface, gravity tends to draw your neck down on itself.

This can set the stage for blocked airways. When you position the base of an adjustable bed in such a way that your head is somehow propped up, you are taking away some weight from your body, eliminating the obstruction and thus allowing you to sleep more soundly.

A set of pillows stacked together may help achieve the same effect, and you may even consider a lot of things with your pillows on your current bed just to see if shifting your sleep position will somehow benefit you.

Unfortunately, pillows are not highly reputed when it comes to providing firm support in the long run. There is a good possibility that you will roll off of them whilst you are fast asleep in the middle of the night. You will toss and turn through the night, but if you are in a bed with an adjustable base, your mattress will make your head remain elevated.

What some people will try to do is simulate the result of an adjustable bed by sleeping in a chair or a recliner seat. However, this will not provide enough long-term comfort required for a good night’s sleep. Besides, it can also put some strain on the back.

Sleeping Partners Would Be More Relaxed

Sleep apnea affects more than just the person who has it. Indirectly, it can also affect the person you’re sharing the bed with. Both of you will be more relaxed and will have more restful sleep if you are using a bed with an adjustable foundation instead.

If you keep on waking up because you have a loudly snoring partner due to sleep apnea, you’ll benefit and appreciate the use of a bed that can be adjusted. This way, you can get your most comfortable position and thus enjoy a more sound sleep.

Other Treatments for Sleep Apnea

It is important to keep in mind that bed furnishing that comes with an adjustable base can indeed significantly help alleviate sleep apnea symptoms, but this is not supposed to be seen as its exclusive cure.

You can reach out to your doctor about other possible treatment options. If you haven’t already, consider obtaining for yourself a sleep report. In the course of such a study, you can figure out whether or not there are relevant positive improvements to your sleep apnea symptoms when you change your sleep positions.

A CPAP machine is sometimes seen as a good option in such cases and  may be recommended by a professional medical practitioner. These devices may continuously blow air right into your breathing passages to keep them open, and thus breathe without interruption.

There is a certain level of assurance that you will not stop breathing, especially in the middle of the night. The use of a CPAP machine is even more convenient when you have a bed with an adjustable base.
